The construction of 48 new homes around the Waminda Park area of Benalla West is one step closer.
On Monday, May 30, demolition began on several empty homes as developers began the project.
The $30 million development was announced by Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes in November 2023 as part of the State Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.
“I’m proud to be part of a government that has made housing a priority,” Ms Symes said at the time.
“This investment will deliver additional quality, modern homes to an area of Benalla that deserves this uplift.”
In order for the project to move forward, 21 older dwellings, cited as no longer fit for purpose, needed to be removed.
There is a master plan for the area which outlines a long-term vision to make Benalla West a better place to live - featuring more new homes, upgraded, safer and greener public open spaces, with new play facilities for children and more trees.
New streets and pedestrian paths will also be delivered, improving connectivity in the neighbourhood.
The local community and stakeholders have played an important role in helping to shape the master plan with feedback and consultation asking locals for their input on:
- The design of the new homes
- Ways to create a welcoming and secure neighbourhood
- Movement around the area, and
- Shared open space
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said the development was great news for the Rose City
"I am pleased to see the start of stage one of the Benalla West project as part of the Victoria Government’s Big Housing Build,“ she said.
“This week, old properties are being removed to make way for 48 new homes with significant improvements in public spaces in the neighbourhood.
“This project will create over 270 jobs during construction, providing a significant boost to the Benalla Rural City local economy, while creating more affordable and public housing to support our community’s needs."
