April Weir and Alyssa Townsend are finalists in the School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year category and will be heading to Griffith for the regional conference on June 9, where the winner will be announced.
April is currently in her last year of her Certificate II in Business Administration at ANZ Bank and Alyssa is completing a Certificate III in individual support at CareSouth.
Both students said they were extremely excited to receive the call informing them they were finalists, after what was a very extensive application and interview process.
“Our supervisors of our traineeships were asked to fill out a form about us, and from there we were invited to Wagga Wagga where we were interviewed in front of a panel,” said Alyssa.
“The interview was about an hour long and we were asked individualised questions about our traineeships.
“I was so excited to receive the call though, I had butterflies all day waiting for it.”
April said while the interview was nerve-racking, her confidence in herself had skyrocketed thanks to her traineeship and this selection process.
“Having a panel of professionals ask you questions was scary, but I walked out feeling a lot more confident,” she said.
April has been able to secure full-time employment through her traineeship, following her graduating at the end of the year.
If either of the girls are successful at the regional conference, they will head to the state conference later in the year.
Deniliquin High School career adviser Pam Sinha said being selected as finalists for the Riverina Training Awards was a huge accolade for the girls.
“It’s an outstanding achievement,” said Ms Sinha.
“These traineeships help the students become more open, confident and improve their leadership skills.
“They help them to become part of the local community and provide students with a future pathway.”
