A-Grade certainly had a battle on their hands against Glenrowan this week and unfortunately were down by four goals at the final siren 39-43.
Some uncharacteristic errors by the side, not seen this year, made it difficult for the girls to get into a good rhythm and flow.
Despite this, they worked tirelessly all game to try and create opportunities to turn balls over but were simply unable to close the gap by the final siren.
Meagan James played a brilliant captain’s game and led the side from the start, maximising possession and working hard to create turnovers.
The defensive pressure by the girls down the court was brilliant again, led by Georgia Spencer who also produced another good game in goals.
Top effort to the girls who did all they physically could to get themselves over the line — while disappointed in the result they should be proud of the way they played.
B-Grade
B-Grade had a good win over Glenrowan this week 67 to 19. The girls started very slow and had to work their way into the match.
A high number of footwork calls against the team, something the girls have not faced this year, made it difficult to create any fluid movement through the mid court into attack.
Despite this, the girls were able to pull themselves together and create some good passages of play.
Once again, Sal Burgess was excellent in shooting as was Elyse Felstead with her movement and placement.
Jen Pearce had another good week in defence, taking a number of great rebounds and intercepts, even flying out of the ring to do so.
B-Reserve
B-Reserve came out strong in quarter’s one and two but dropped off in pressure during the third.
However, they ended the game extremely strong in the last quarter finishing with a 50-goal win.
The girls implemented strategies that they’d been working on in training and showed the spectators they are strong and improving every week.
Hannah McCallum, in shooting and WA, played an extremely consistent game and provided the girls with a nice flow down the court.
Sarah Kilpatrick, a new player to the team, played centre for three quarters — she not only had drive in her leads, but got intercepts, which only added to the scoreboard.
She proved that she’s going to be a massive asset to the team. Abbie Buhagiar started in GK and played WD and got a lot more intercepts than usual.
Coming from never playing netball to where she is now is outstanding. Her passion and attitude towards netball these past two weeks has been extremely admirable.
Under-17
Going into this week C-grade understood that they would have to be consistent in order to boost their percentage and move up a position on the ladder.
The girls came out firing in the first quarter, shooting 21 unanswered goals. This form continued throughout the game, as they kept Glenrowan to only two goals for the game.
Gertie McCallum had a stint in goal this week, working well with both Jemma Smith and Chelsea Mackinnon to ensure the Panthers’ score kept ticking over.
Mia Begley supported the girls fantastically at the attacking end and had wonderful pressure down the court.
Leah Miffrici was also applying pressure down the court, getting multiple intercepts and fingertips on passes.
The game was an attacker’s dream, with Benalla’s defenders not needing to do much work as the rest of the team was able to stop the ball from entering the opposition’s goal third.
All Blacks ended up winning the game 86-2.
Under-15
The Under-15s started from the first centre pass strongly and were aggressive in their drive for the ball.
This continued until the final whistle, and ended in a victory, 38 to 11.
Rose Mathieson was so determined in her play, intercepting and cutting her player off from the play.
Kate Rial was a great asset re-leading and being there as an option for her teammates.
Caitlin Timmers was amazing in defence, getting the rebounds and reading the play for intercepts.
For everyone there, it was great watching the girls working hard together.
