Dr Bettio is senior Climate Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology, co-author of the State of the Climate 2023, and past student at Benalla's FCJ College.
The entire community is invited to her talk which is titled Climate Extremes in NE Victoria — Current and Future Risks.
Dr Bettio, and CSIRO Climate Scientist, Dr Leanne Webb, gave a presentation early in 2021 related to the changing climate in general.
Since then, more climate records have continued to be broken, either with highest average temperatures, record rainfalls, warming oceans, or intense storm frequencies.
On this occasion, Dr Bettio's talk will highlight many of the risks that the Benalla community faces from all of these extremes.
Benalla is a community with a strong connection to agriculture, that has an ageing demographic.
Like many similar communities, it’s struggling with cost-of-living pressures such as rapidly increasing insurance costs — largely due to damage claims from extreme weather events.
Benalla Sustainable Future Group’s Peter Holmes has urged all community members to attend.
“Especially those with leadership roles in local government, agriculture, industry, health, education, financial services, emergency services ... Come along and listen to this talk, ask questions or make suggestions for immediate actions that need to be undertaken to help future-proof our community and region from the ravages of climate change,” Mr Holmes said.
“Most importantly for the benefit of our children and grandchildren.”
The presentation will be at the Benalla Uniting Church in Carrier St from 7.30pm. It will conclude with a light supper and a Q and A session.
BSFG is requesting that those wishing to attend should RSVP for catering purposes to bsfginc@gmail.com
