Over the past month, a group of dedicated students from FCJ College’s Vocational Major program have made a lasting impact at St Joseph’s Primary School.

Part of that program has involved guiding Year 5/6 students through a series of engaging AFL lessons as part of a special invasion games project.
Their involvement has not only enriched the sporting experiences of the younger students, but also fostered strong connections and demonstrated the power of student leadership.
The initiative, led by FCJ College teacher Alexandra Keast, saw the senior students deliver weekly AFL coaching sessions each Thursday morning.
Carefully planned and enthusiastically delivered, the sessions quickly became a highlight for the young students.
St Joseph’s teacher Sharon Mellington praised the lessons for their structure, energy and effectiveness, describing the senior students’ professionalism and delivery as “second to none”.
“The lessons were so well thought out and our students looked forward to them every week,” Sharon said.

“It was a joy to watch the older students guide, teach and encourage our kids with such maturity and care.”
The success of the program extended beyond the school grounds when the FCJ students also volunteered their time at a recent Benalla and district cross country event.
Alexandra said their presence was felt not just through their practical assistance —supervising the track, distributing water, and collecting asthma pumps — but through their enthusiastic support for every runner.
“The encouragement they gave each student, calling them by name and cheering them on, really stood out,” she said.
“These were real moments of leadership, and they showed how much our students have grown, especially in the area of interpersonal skills, which was a focus in our last project.”
The FCJ College students’ contributions did not go unnoticed.
Teachers, parents and even the district convenor expressed appreciation for the way they carried themselves throughout the day.
“Their willingness to go above and beyond, staying back to pack up equipment without being asked, was a testament to their sense of responsibility and teamwork,” Alexandra said.
This collaboration between FCJ College and St Joseph’s has been mutually rewarding.
Alexandra said the program was something her students looked forward to every Thursday, while Sharon expressed her gratitude and excitement for future partnerships.
“I cannot thank them enough for all their volunteer work,” Sharon said.
“They have left a lasting impression on our students and our school community.”
Both schools continue to have a fruitful and ongoing partnership — one that continues to foster leadership, community, and mutual growth through real-world learning experiences.
