Gibson takes on challenge of S5000 at Sandown

From driving go-karts at 10 years old, former Benalla and Melbourne-based driver Michael Gibson will this weekend take to Sandown in the new S5000 category for round six of the Shannons Nationals.

The Nationals visited Winton Motor Raceway last round, but it is Sandown who will be host to the debut of the open-wheeled S5000 race cars.

With a background in Sports 2000 and touring cars, including racing in the Winton Historics, Gibson is also a motorsport engineer, tending cars owned by Melbourne racer, Apex Steel’s Joe Calleja.

He also comes from a well known Australian motorsport family, with his father Paul a well-known sports car racer, while his uncle, Bevan Gibson was tragically killed at Bathurst in 1969.

Gibson’s S5000 program comes courtesy of former Formula Holden racer Albert Callegher (ACM Finance), and sponsors WM Waste and Apex.

“Since I was 16 I’ve been trying to put together a deal to race at a decent level – the fact that it is now happening, especially in something as awesome as S5000, is a bit surreal,” Gibson told www.s5000.com.au.

“I’m incredibly thankful and grateful that Albert, Mark Jeffs (WM Waste), Joe, and others have combined to make this happen. We’ll be giving it our best shot."
