Together with construction partner John Holland, Inland Rail is modifying the Benalla station precinct to provide sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains and delivering a major renovation of the station precinct.
Benalla works include the relocation of the east track to become a new west track, a new station platform and improved accessibility with a new pedestrian underpass, pathways, lifts, open forecourt and car park.
Inland Rail B2A acting delivery director Scott Anderson said work had now commenced on the eight Inland Rail Beveridge to Albury (B2A) tranche two sites, including Broadford, Wandong, Hume Freeway – Seymour and Tallarook, Euroa and Benalla.
Benalla Railway Station will undergo massive upgrades as part of the Inland Rail project.
“Following the completion of our four tranche one sites earlier this month, it’s great to see the project progressing into the construction phase on tranche two,” he said.
“We’ve worked closely with the Benalla community for many years to design a safer and more accessible railway station precinct the community will enjoy for decades.
“The modified station precinct will deliver many improvements on the current site, and we thank local communities for their patience and understating as we carry out this transformative work.”
The Benalla station underpass will be removed and replaced as part of the Inland Rail project.
The tranche two project includes the construction of four new higher bridges, a vehicle underpass, track and station modifications to allow the safe passage of double-stacked freight trains.
Inland Rail is being proposed as a fast freight backbone arterial running from Melbourne to Brisbane that will transform how goods are moved around Australia
It aims to better link producers, manufacturers and businesses to national and global markets.
