DEECA has assured landholders that there have been no changes to requirements for controlling kangaroos on farmland.

DEECA has blasted misreporting on kangaroo control measure to assure farmers that regulations on kangaroo shooting have not changed.

A DEECA spokesperson said the conservation control regulator was still issuing Authority to Control Wildlife permits to landholders and professional shooters.

“The conservation regulator is responsible for administering the ATCW permit system and has not changed its approach to assessing or issuing for kangaroo management,” the spokesperson said.

“There is no enforced limit for how many permits can be issued or the number of kangaroos that can be controlled under the ATCW system.”

Assessment of all applications for ATCW permits will remain on a case-by-case basis to ensure they meet the requirements of the Wildlife Act 1975.

DEECA plans to carry out a statewide aerial survey of Victoria’s kangaroos later in 2024, with the results of the survey to be used to update population estimates and to set KHP harvest quotas for 2025.

Landholders can either apply for an ATCW permit or access a professional harvester through the Kangaroo Harvesting Program.
