State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the water minister to take immediate steps to reduce the risk of flooding in Rochester.

Lake Eppalock recently reached over 100 per cent capacity and now holds more than 306,000 megalitres, with further spring rains expected. The risk of a spill that could flood the Campaspe River is now very high.
In 2022 Lake Eppalock was only half-full at this time of year, before heavy spring rain filled the storage and caused it to spill into the Campaspe River, which then surged into Rochester and inundated more than 90 per cent of the town’s homes.
This winter’s heavy rain means that the ground is soaked in the central Victoria catchment area, and unable to absorb further water. Flood risk assessments suggest that a small rainfall event of just 10mm could result in an estimated 8000 to 12,000 ML of inflow.
Ms Lovell said she had been contacted by constituents who were concerned that Rochester was at risk of flooding again.
“The minister must listen to the concerns of Rochester residents and take immediate action to reduce the risk of flooding in Rochester, and communicate more effectively with the community whose fears mount while the government remains silent,” she said.
