The focus is on improving drainage in key areas of the east main drain and west main drain.
These works aim to improve water flow, reduce erosion, and make the drainage system more effective.
On the east main drain, works are currently happening between the Benalla Racecourse and the railway line.
Here, the open drain is being desilted and reshaped using excavators to improve the drain capacity during heavy rain events.
The works also include additional pipe culverts at Gillies St and Racecourse Rd to increase the flow of water under both roads.
Vegetation along the drain has also been cleared to improve water flow.
“These works are designed to reduce the amount of localised flooding in the racecourse area, something that residents have been asking for,” Benall Mayor Bernie Hearn said.
Council is also working with developers on Witt St to build a drainage retention basin that will hold water running off the new subdivision during heavy rain.
At the Enterprise Park industrial subdivision, stormwater runoff will be diverted away from the east main drain, thanks to earthworks and a piped drainage system that will direct water towards the Mokoan Channel and Winton Wetlands.
“Council is proactively working with developers of both residential and industrial subdivisions in this area to ensure our drainage system can continue to stand up to rain events into the future,” Cr Hearn said.
For the west main drain, trees blocking the drain are being cleared between Goodwin St and Boger St, while a rock beaching is being added to slow water flow and reduce erosion at the Boger St culverts.
“These improvements are part of the council’s larger program to keep homes, properties, and roads safe from floods,” Cr Hearn said.
“Council is proud to make Benalla Rural City a safer place by focusing on this important work.”
