“Of these clients, 26 per cent are living with a disability, and 33 per cent are homeless or in unsuitable temporary accommodation,” Ms Coffey revealed.
“Sixteen per cent of those assisted were coming to Vinnies for the first time and were very humbly seeking assistance to get through to their next payday.
“We all know about and feel the squeeze with the rising cost of living - rising rents and mortgages, the cost of groceries and the high cost of fuel, to name just a few escalating budget expenses.”
Ms Coffey said Christmas was a particularly challenging time for local families, as well as the summer holiday and back to school period.
“Christmas was a busy time with local volunteers preparing hampers to see pensioners and local families through the festive season,” she said.
“We are very thankful for the generosity of many locals, including businesses, organisations and the St Michael’s school community, who made donations of food, cash and other items such as bonbons and decorations.
“Since Christmas, many parents have struggled to feed the children during the holidays and also to cope with back to school expenses.”
With the need for assistance expected to continue, Ms Coffey St Vinnie’s is calling on more locals to volunteer.
“Vinnies members are all volunteers and willingly give of their time to assist others.
“However, we are ageing, and our numbers are diminishing, so we are calling out for more volunteers to join us for any amount of time you can spare.

"Meanwhile, we need to introduce some changes so that we can continue to be of assistance.
“All those seeking assistance will need to ring for an appointment on 0488 694 012.
“We are unable to see you without an appointment. Additionally, you will need to bring a current Centrelink statement or payslip before we can offer you any assistance.
“You will find us all fair and friendly but firm when you come for assistance.
“We cannot always help you, and we cannot always assist in the way you might want, but we will always listen as you explain your situation and do our best to help you meet your needs.“
The volunteers were thanked for their efforts so far during a recent visit from Central Council president Jim Rogers from Parkes.
“Jim was very keen to hear about activities here in Deniliquin and was quick to thank the local members who work closely with their clients experiencing difficult times,” Ms Coffey said.
