As a concerned ratepayer and local business owner, I am writing to express my concerns regarding the proposed four-day work week for Murrumbidgee Shire Council employees.
My primary question is whether Council has commissioned, or intends to commission, an independent cost analysis to ensure that ratepayers will not be disadvantaged through increased operating costs or higher rates as a result of this proposal.
I draw Council's attention to the attempt by Launceston City Council to implement a similar proposal in February 2026.
That proposal was ultimately abandoned after concerns were raised that no independent, standalone business case had been prepared to justify reduced working days.
It also faced significant opposition from businesses and ratepayers.
Given this example, I respectfully ask whether Murrumbidgee Shire Council will commit to undertaking an independent cost analysis before making any decision on this proposal.
Such an assessment would provide transparency, assist informed decision-making, and help ensure that the interests of ratepayers are protected.
I appreciate your consideration of this matter and look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
David Kennett
