The plan is a key framework designed to promote responsible pet ownership and enhance safety for the entire community.
It has clear guidelines for dog and cat owners across the region.
It focuses on creating a safe and harmonious environment for both pets and residents by reinforcing best practices in animal management.
Key aspects of the plan include updated regulations for pet registration and microchipping, which are vital for reuniting lost pets with their owners.
A significant focus of the new plan is on the management of animals in public spaces.
This includes the importance of keeping dogs under effective control and reinforcing the existing cat curfew, which requires cats to be securely confined to their owner's property at all times.
These measures are designed to protect local wildlife, prevent nuisance issues and ensure the wellbeing of the animals themselves.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said the plan was about making sure everyone could enjoy our community safely, whether they had a pet or not.
“This plan is about common sense and looking out for each other,” Cr Hearn said.
“It gives pet owners clear rules to follow so we can keep our public spaces safe and make sure lost pets can be identified and returned home quickly.
“It’s about being a responsible owner and a good neighbour, which helps make Benalla Rural City a better place for all of us.
“We encourage residents with pets to ensure their pet has up-to-date registrations and the appropriate microchipping.”
Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2029.
