Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said the pilot took off just after 1pm from a strip on Tuppal Rd, Tocumwal.
Initial reports suggest the plane lost power, causing it to fall to the ground and land about 200m from where it took off.
Insp Huggett said the pilot was initially taken to Shepparton for treatment, and has since been transferred to Melbourne.
He said police had not received any confirmation regarding the extent of the injuries.
Emergency services were called to the incident about 1.26pm.
It included the Tocumwal Fire + Rescue NSW service as first responders, and the Tocumwal Rural Fire Service.
Insp Huggett has confirmed that there would be no official Civil Aviation and Safety Authority investigation into the incident.
