Health okay for preschool
The Rochester Business and Professional Women’s Club has been given approval by the Victorian Health Commission to commence a Pre-School Play Centre in Rochester.
The aim of the play centre is for mothers to have their children minded for a period of two hours, one day a week, while they shop locally, visit the dentist or the doctor, or just plain relax.
The centre will be established in the kindergarten section of St John’s Presbyterian Church Hall, In Victorian St, which has been approved by the Health Commission for that purpose, and the centre will operate on a Friday.
Jack Hart will not forget ’73
Jack Hart will never forget 1973. Early in the year, the family firm which he controls celebrated its centenary. Later, he and his wife enjoyed their 30th wedding anniversary. And finally, Jack Hart has been named as Rochester’s Citizen of the Year for 1973.
The citizen of the year award is sponsored by the Rochester Australia Day Celebrations Committee and the presentation of the award is a feature of the Australia Day dinner in the Rochester Shire Hall.
Mr Hart was nominated by the Rochester Club, of which he is a past president.
Why all the fuss?
Discussion lately over whether or not women should be allowed to go topless on Victoria’s beaches is so much evidence of narrow-mindedness from some quarters.
The latest statement is that women are unlikely to be prosecuted for topless behaviour because it’s not exactly known whose province it is to take the action.
Beaches all over the world have been the scene of topless bathing for years and yet when somebody decides to shed a bit of clothing on an Australian beach, there’s an immediate uproar.
Coach orders road work for players
The coach of the Rochester Football Club, Jim Clark, in preparing for the 1974 season, has ordered all players and intending players to do road work prior to the commencement of organised training.
Mr Clark said organised training would commence on Tuesday, February 12, and this would give players approximately 10 weeks to get fit for the opening game of the Goulburn Valley League.
Clarke told the Campaspe Valley News that all players who intended playing with the Rochester club this coming season must do at least three training sessions of slow jogging on the roads a week, up to the commencement of track training on Tuesday, February 12.
The coach has asked all players to do at least two miles of slow road work on three occasions each week, either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Bubb, a fine example of community spirit
People willing to put their hands up for committee positions are hard to find, and yet this year’s Citizen of the Year for Rochester and District Kathleen Bubb holds the position of treasurer in six separate organisations.
Mrs Bubb was cited as a “fine example of the community spirit which makes the Rochester district a great place to live” in the winning submission for this year’s Australia Day awards.
Her preference for treasury positions stems from her early working life at Newman’s Accountants in Rochester after she left St Joseph’s Secondary School
Lions club wins group award
Turning a bare patch of ground into a garden at Rochester Railway Station has won Rochester Lions Club the Australia Day Community Group of the Year award.
Thirty members of the club turned out to complete the project over two days in May last year.
Bluestone pitchers were used from the disbanded saleyards to border the garden bed, thereby retaining some local heritage while beautifying the area.
The garden bed enhances the entrance to the tourist information centre, the first point of call for many visitors to the area.

‘Go-to’ person Joan named Citizen of the Year
Nanneella resident Joan Jenkins is the Rochester district’s Citizen of the Year.
The Nanneella-Timmering community nominated Mrs Jenkins for the award for countless reasons but the most recent being her contribution towards the revitalisation of the Nanneella Memorial Hall.

Tigers recover
Rochester Tigers retained the Matt Dingwall memorial trophy after defeating Rochester United by 61 runs in a two-day match at the weekend.
Home side United had the Tigers in trouble early on Saturday after the visitors chose to bat, dismissing the team’s top order.
Sean Williams, however, hit some nice shots to score 30 and Daniel Major applied himself well to finish on 22 not out as the team was dismissed for 116 with 33 overs left in the day.
