Energy Safe Victoria and Solar Victoria have joined forces to launch the Make the Safe Call campaign, encouraging residents to book an A-grade electrician to carry out maintenance this spring.
With around 30 per cent of homes across the state now generating their own solar power, authorities say regular servicing is essential.
Over the past three years, Energy Safe has recorded 138 solar-related house fires — many of which could have been prevented with routine checks.
Most incidents occurred between September and January, making the start of warmer weather a critical reminder for homeowners.
“Rooftop solar is constantly exposed to the elements and over time, components like wiring, switches and isolators can deteriorate,” Energy Safe chief executive Leanne Hughson said.
“Just like a car, your system needs regular servicing to stay safe and reliable, and only a licensed electrician has the expertise to do that.
“A home solar system is not just another appliance — it’s a live electrical system that must be handled by a qualified, licensed professional.”
The campaign also warns against unqualified operators offering maintenance services, which may involve little more than panel cleaning.
Ms Hughson said these providers are not trained to detect or fix faults and could even increase fire risks.
The key safety steps for solar owners include:
- booking a maintenance service at least once every two years,
- using a licensed A-grade electrician and obtaining a Certificate of Electrical Safety for any wiring repairs, and
- monitoring for warning signs such as burning smells or unusual noises.
Victorians can check an electrician’s licence through the public register energysafe.vic.gov.au/licensing/search-public-register and report unauthorised electrical workers to Energy Safe on 9203 9700 or via the Energy Safe website.
