SheppArchies brings together 16 emerging and established local artists, each putting their own spin on the iconic portrait tradition and creating their very own Archibald-inspired works.
The exhibition shines a spotlight on the talent closer to home, showcasing the diverse styles, personalities and creative voices of artists from the Shepparton region.
The exhibition was the idea of local artist Tank, who saw an opportunity to celebrate the region’s artists and people after hearing the Archibald Prize was coming to Shepparton.
“After hearing the Archibald Prize was coming to SAM, I really felt that it would be a cool thing to do to put on a local version which we’ve called the SheppArchies,” Tank said.
“It’s had a great response from the region’s artists and for some it has been quite a challenge, as we’re not all portrait artists.”
The exhibition will run at Tank’s Art Gallery from September 5 to 14 and features portraits by Christine Broersen, Greg Beckenham, Carmel Robertson, Tim Bowtell, Kaye Poulton, John Lewis, Joan Erikson, Marion Langford, Adrienne West, Kelly Carmody, Tank, Nicole Wells, Sarah Jane, Rick Bruhn, John Head and Kody Bothwell.
Everyone is welcome at the opening night from 6pm on Thursday, September 3.
Who are the artists painting? Well, you’ll have to attend the exhibition or visit Tank’s Art Gallery to find out.
“Put this one in your calendar,” Tank said.
“You won’t want to miss it.
“We look forward to seeing everyone at our opening night.”
