Australia Grain and Forage Seeds (AGF) has worked with Smyth Seeds for decades and were excited to take the respected local business into its family.
Owner Mike Smyth said he and his brother John had run the business for more than three decades after taking over from their dad, Mick.
“Our father was in partnership with another family, the Murphys, and Smyth & Murphy started operating about 70 years ago,” Mike said.
With John having retired a few years ago Mike decided it was time to join his brother and take a step back from the business.
“I had been thinking about retiring for some time, and the company we’ve sold to, AGF, is a very similar type of company to ours,” he said.
“In so far as its a family owned, Australian owned, company in the seed industry.”
Mike said in its time Smyth Seeds had had a good relationship with the Australian Seed Federation — the peak industry body for the Australian seed industry.
“My father Mick and brother John have had a lot of input into the ASF,” he said.
“Dad was one of the founding members and John has actually been appointed as a life member for all his work over the years.”
Mike now plans to do some work on a farm he owns with John out at Upper Ryans Creek.
“And we plan to do some travel,” he said.
“My wife, Sabine, her family is all out in Germany, and we’ve spoken about taking a trip.
“So we’re looking forward to that.“
