Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica was joined by State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes for the official sod turning.
SES Cobram unit deputy controller Luke Herezo said it has been along time coming.
“Back in the day when Cobram SES started it was located in Tocumwal, 20 minutes away,” Mr Herezo said.
"So for the last eight to 10 years we have been fighting to get a SES HQ in the actual town ship of Cobram.“
Mr Herezo said it has only been thanks to the generosity of local people and businesses that certain life saving equipment has been stored in Cobram, saving valuable time when they need to get out and help people.
"In that time we have operated in everything from, storage facilities to people’s back yards and even land loaned by government agencies,“ he said.
Funds for the new HQ were green lit around 12 months ago, and in the ensuing months designs have been finalised and the job put out to tender.
“We are looking at about 12 months now for the build,” Mr Herezo said.
“We cannot wait, this will be immensely good, for not only us, but for the community as well.
“At the moment if, for example, you are in a road accident in Cobram you might be waiting 20 minuted for resources to come from Tocumwal.
"This has never been good enough for our community.
“So thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way, including various community groups, and many local people.
“Without them this would not be happening.”
