St Augustine’s helps nation say ‘sorry’

Sorry Day: Uncle Rick Ronnan conducts a smoking ceremony as students from St Augustine’s file past him before entering the Brigidine Centre for the Celebration of the Euharist service led by Father Joe Taylor (inset).

Father Joe Taylor’s eye-catching robes were just one of the features at a National Sorry Day ceremony on Friday at St Augustine’s College.

The college community paused to mark the event, combining its Celebration of the Eucharist with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country led by Traditional Elder, Uncle Rik Ronnan.

Setting the example: St Augustine’s College principal Jay Sutton and Father Joe Taylor prior to the smoking ceremony and welcome to country that was completed by Uncle Rik Ronnan.

St Augustine’s newly commissioned FIRE Carriers, who have committed to keeping the flame of reconciliation alight in our community, were also recognised as Aboriginal liaison officer, Kasey Cooper, prepared the students for the ceremony.

Father Joe’s robes were made by Shepparton artist Julie Ferguson six years ago, but this was the St Brendan’s, Shepparton, parish priest’s first Kyabram ceremony.

He said he had spent six years in PNG where he also had colourful robes made to recognise the Indigenous culture.

Special robes: Father Joe Taylor wore specially made robes for the Sorry Day ceremony, made by an Indigenous artist, Julie Ferguson, from Shepparton.
