St Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle.
Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at 16.
He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.
St Patrick’s Day is held annually on March 17 to mark his death.
In modern times it has become customary to people to celebrate by wearing green and by showcasing stereotypical Irish images like leprechauns and the pot of gold and rainbow.
In the lead up to Sunday, a shopfront display in the Deniliquin CBD paying tribute was set up.
And the Deniliquin Boat Club used the day as a great excuse to get together for a family friendly event and adult ski day.
Mark Cartwright got right into the spirit, dressing as a leprechaun and taking to the river, and posing with guests.
A full report on the ski day from Aileen Hayes will appear in Friday’s edition.
Market move for Easter
Those of you who follow the market schedule might be surprised to find the Deniliquin Waring Gardens bare this weekend.
The Deniliquin Lions Community Market is usually held there on the fourth Saturday of each month.
But organisers have made an expectation for March, and have moved their market back a week to give you something extra to do over Easter.
The March market will instead be held Easter Monday, April 1.
And no, it’s not an April Fool’s Day joke.
Seniors Fest coming to a close
As the NSW Seniors Festival comes to an end, Intereach is encouraging the target group to remain active outside the celebratory period.
Intereach says staying active is key to a vibrant life, especially as we age!
Regular exercise boosts physical health, sharpens the mind, and uplifts the spirit.
And Intereach is all about making movement fun and social, but also encouraging you to keep it up at home.
You can dive into the Intereach blog to discover simple tips, and how the in-home support services can empower you to live independently.
