The Cooinda garden project, undertaken by HoL students, has been some time in the making.
Cooinda had supplied the raised garden beds to students earlier in the year.
Having constructed them there were subsequent delays in installation, because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Last week the day finally arrived, in between rain, where students were able to visit on-site to complete the installation.
Benalla P-12 Hands-On Learning teacher Pip Rowe said the day was positive and ran to plan with all garden beds filled.
“It was a great experience for our students to come on site and discover the Cooinda ‘community within a community’ and chat with residents who were interested in the project,” Ms Rowe said.
Cooinda chief executive officer Alex McKenna said under the guidance of Cooinda’s maintenance team students were able to fill the garden beds with mulch, ready for planting.
“Which is a part of our extensive landscape planning,” Mr McKenna said.
“It was a valuable workplace learning experience for students, who had to Rapid Antigen test prior to entry and wear a mask whilst in the facility.
“The students were also fully briefed on occupational health and safety requirements; and emergency systems.
“The Norm Matthews Wing garden beautification project has been a great example of community coming together.
“We thank Tomorrow Today Foundation for their generous support in providing the mulch to the Hands-On Learning Centre for their gardening project.
“It was also good to watch the intergenerational connection, by being able to welcome the students outdoors at Cooinda.”
