Two locals clubs aiming to do more in this sphere are the Deniliquin Golf Club and the Deniliquin RSL Bowling Club.
And with cash from the NSW Mental Health Sports Fund at their disposal, they can do even more.
Deniliquin Golf Club secretary manager Norm Purtill said the golf club’s $30,000 share will support an extended campaign called ‘Up to Par’, which encourages people to ‘Putt your wellbeing first’.
“For us at Deni Golf Club, we mostly want to see our members feel comfortable to have these conversations about mental health and wellbeing,” he said.
“We want people to be talking to each other and supporting each other when things might be going a bit tough.”
The first of a series of events leading to this goal will be held Sunday, September 11.
The Community Wellbeing Golf Day is open to anyone in the community. Entry is free and there will be a free barbecue, raffles and some great prizes to be won. Wellbeing resources will also be available.
Bookings can be made at the Deniliquin Golf Club pro shop, where a sign up sheet is available, or online at www.denigolfclub.com.au/cms/play-golf/.
The Deniliquin RSL Bowling Club’s $17,700 grant will allow it to continue with its ‘Bowls Gr8 for Brains’ program.
Due to a lack of funding on previous years, the program was only open to certain members of the community.
Deniliquin RSL Bowling Club president Tony Tonta said the funding allows them to open it up to the general public, and help more people.
“Bowls Gr8 for Brains is a mental health support program at bowling clubs, where the focus is on lawn bowls, finding support through peers and having fun,” Mr Tonta said.
“This funding will now allow us to expand on what we have already started, and welcome the public to our growing program.”
