Hosted by the Edward River Fishing Club, the action kicks off at the Deniliquin Boat Club tonight with a family fun night and mega raffle.
This is open to anyone in the community, not just Cast for Cash participants. Tickets go on sale from 6pm, with the draw starting about 8pm.
The fishing period is tomorrow, followed by presentations and more fun at the Boat Club in the evening.
The competition has been planned specifically as a farewell to the Murray cod fishing season, which closes Monday, September 1 and remains closed until November 30.
“The annual three-month Murray Cod spawning closure is vital to protect this species during its breeding period,” Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) program leader of fish stocking and enhancement operations Jim Harnwell said.
“Copeton and Blowering dams remain open year-round, with ongoing NSW DPIRD monitoring largely confirming that cod populations in these dams are stocked, hence a closure isn’t needed.
“Murray Cod are Australia’s most iconic freshwater sportfish and are highly prized by recreational fishers for their size, strength and the challenge they provide.
“The species is also an important part of our inland river ecosystems and has significant cultural and environmental value throughout the Murray-Darling Basin.
“The seasonal spawning closure for Murray Cod helps protect breeding fish at a critical time, supporting healthy populations and quality recreational fishing opportunities for years to come.”
