Gary the fibreglass pop-art cow was stolen from Judd Park in Merrigum overnight on February 12.
Only the green concrete it was attached to remains.
The cow is inspired by the explosive style of classic pop-art, sporting comic-book energy with stencilled figures and the word ‘Whaam’ painted on it.
The cow is part of Greater Shepparton’s Moooving Art herd, and its theft is udderly disappointing for the region.
Police said a resident reported seeing the cow laying on its side in the park on February 12, and when they returned, it was gone.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said the cow’s disappearance had left a noticeable gap in the Moooving Art trail and in the Merrigum community.
“Gary’s become a bit of a local character over the years,” he said.
“He’s travelled across the region, made plenty of fans along the way, and brought a lot of colour and enjoyment to the community, so it’s disappointing to see him go missing.”
Cr Sali said the Moooving Art cows played an important role in celebrating local creativity and giving people another reason to get out and explore local towns.
“And yes, Gary’s always had a bit of a flair for the dramatic — between the bright pop-art colours and that quirky red beret, he’s pretty hard to miss — but this is one case where we’re hoping Gary stops moooving and comes home soon,” Cr Sali said.
“The response from the community since he disappeared really shows how much these artworks mean to people.
“We’re hopeful that, with a bit of help, Gary will soon be back where he belongs, bringing a smile to locals and visitors again.”
