The club works hard to provide high class events and the flow on for the region through the impact of players and their families visiting the town is substantial.
The Inter-Regional Country Championships will be held from January 6-8. This is the 67th time this event will be held.
Players from all parts of country Victoria will be attending to represent their regions.
The events will crown the best country Victorian players from 12 and under right through to 50/+ events. The highlight of the tournament is the Open section and this is extremely prestigious.
Players accumulate points for their region and Yarrawonga’s region Goulburn will be keen to defend their title won in Horsham earlier this year. There will be many local players participating.
The All Stars Championships will be held in Yarrawonga for the fourth time from January 15-18.
This tournament is becoming very popular amongst players from South East Australia. The events range from 10 and Under through to Open.
This will attract some of the best junior and open players and the standard will be high. Local players, especially juniors, are encouraged to enter as players will be grouped on ability allowing all players to have a hit against someone of their standard.
Entry for this event is made via the Tennis Australia website and the closing deadline is January 5.
The Godfathers Junior Tournament will be held on February 12. This singles tournament is designed for the local juniors and visiting players from the local region.
This is a great way to get some extra tennis in a competition format. Age groups range from 8 and Under through to 16 and Under.
There will be both A and B Grade allowing every player to have matches at their level. All events will be round robin guaranteeing at least three sets of singles tennis. Entries can be made up until February 11.
Country Week will be held in Yarrawonga from February 13-17. This event is massive bringing around 1500 players to the region for the week.
The standard of tennis varies from extremely high to extremely social and with an estimated 1500 players likely to attend it is a terrific event. Preparations have began with the tennis courts, football oval and both cricket ovals at Vic Park being top dressed.
Entries for Country Week are open and close on January 16. It would be fantastic if a lot of local players play in the event.
Yarrawonga’s annual Easter Tennis Tournament will be held from April 7-10. The tournament is the biggest of its kind in Australia and is the favourite event for players.
Events range from 9 and Under to 55/+ in age groups and from Open through to D Grade in graded competitions.
Basically there is something for everyone. Entries are limited to 1200 players and last year there were over 300 players on a waiting list indicating the interest in the tournament.
Entry for this event is made through the CAT website as usual. Entries will open on February 1 and it is likely the quota of players will be reached within a week.
Thursday Ladies
The final round of the pre-Christmas competition was completed on Thursday night. With a few players unavailable, a rankings shoot out was held with players of similar ability grouped together for their three sets.
The players who won each card were Elllen Bruce, Win Win Htwe, Tess Bassett, Chris Hawkins, Loz Wallace and Michelle Cox.
At the conclusion of the night the winning teams for the competition were confirmed. Fever and Swifts were declared joint winners and certainly deserved their titles as they both had a substantial lead at the top of the ladder.
Well done to Fever consisting of Win Win Htwe, Jess Linehan, Chris Hawkins and Jerry Browning.
For Swifts the team was Ellen Bruce, Kirsty Skene, Loz Wallace and Lisa Ramadge. Prizes were awarded to the winning teams. Snacks and a drink were had to celebrate the season.
Thanks to Gert Brunner and Narelle Bassett for organising the competition. Another short season will commence on Thursday, February 2 and will run for 6 weeks.
It is hoped all the players from this competition will be keen for another hit. If any other ladies are interested in joining the next season they will be certainly welcome.
Players can be either regular players in a team or a fill in.
Tuesday Mens
The final week of Tuesday Mens Tennis was also on last week. As is tradition, competition organiser oversees the rankings shootout for the final week before Christmas.
Ten courts were matched extremely evenly. Each court had an enjoyable set of tennis before the night was prematurely ended with rain.
Players were not all that disappointed as it meant an early review of the night’s proceedings over a festive drink and magnificent noodles from the Yarrawonga Noodle House.
The competition will take a short hiatus before resuming on January 10. Over the holiday period the fill-in list is well used and sometimes exhausted.
Players are always required to top up the fill-in list if anyone is keen for a hit.
After round 6 the ladder is Tecnifibre 24, Wilson 24, Volkl 21, Duns 20, Head 17, Lacoste 17, Prokennex 16, Babolat 15, Slazenger 14, Prince 12, Donnay 8 and Yonex 4.
Goulburn Murray Tennis Association
Yarrawonga’s players competing in the Goulburn Murray Association for Numurkah all had some fantastic matches.
In Division 1 playing for Numurkah Jack Bassett, Grant Chappell, John Brunner and Lucy Bassett have reached the break in second position narrowly behind Echuca.
On Saturday the team had their closest match of the season winning by only 2 games.
Jack Bassett was the most successful player winning his singles, doubles and mixed.
Both John Brunner and Grant Chappell won their singles and a doubles match each. Lucy Bassett narrowly lost her singles and doubles before winning her mixed.
The Division 5 Numurkah side was desperately short and Jason Bassett was recruited. He lost all three doubles sets including the last set 8-0.
It is doubtful that he will be asked to play again.
