Motorbike L-plater was riding at 61km/h over speed limit

An L-plater caught riding a motorbike at 141km/h in Shepparton has been berated by a magistrate who said the speed was “inexcusable”.

Mian Rehal, 22, from Shepparton, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Chris Cole told the court police clocked Rehal riding at 141km/h in the 80km/h zone on Doyles Rd between Channel Rd and Broken River Dve at 4.40pm on January 16.

He told police at the time he “just wanted to open it up a bit”, Leading Sen Constable Cole said.

He was given a $909 on-the-spot fine and 12-month loss of licence but elected to have the matter brought to court because he hoped to have the disqualification period reduced.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett imposed the same fine in court and the same 12-month licence disqualification, as it is a mandatory minimum disqualification period.

He was also convicted of the offence.

“This was extraordinary riding,” Ms Hartnett said.

“This was a ridiculous speed.

“The speed is inexcusable.

“The risk is not only to yourself but to other road users who come across you flying on a motorbike. It’s impossible to predict that speed.”
