U12s Benalla Red vs Myrtleford JFC
The U12s grand final saw the favourites, Myrtleford Saints, take on the inform Benalla Reds. Players were greeted by tricky conditions with a strong breeze to one end. The Saints kicked with the breeze in the first quarter however failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, taking a small lead into the break.
Benalla Red fought back in the second term and hit the lead, going into the half time with confidence. Benalla looked to neutralise the third quarter against the breeze and sent vice-captain Teddy Sheehan to the backline to assist Ted Clancy, both thwarting the many Saints scoring opportunities.
Kicking with the breeze in the last quarter Benalla Red peppered the forward 50, however, Myrtleford’s strong defenders fought gallantly with the end result being a one-point Benalla defeat, and back-to-back premierships for the Saints.
Another team effort from Benalla Red with some of the standouts being powerhouse ruckman Angus Roscoe, who was judged the best player of the finals series. Captain Xavier Beriman and vice-captain Teddy Sheehan gave absolutely everything with both players having great impact throughout the season and the finals campaign.
Toby Smith’s work rate and skill was on display again along with running machines Spencer Whitechurch and Max Reynolds. The backline was a fantastic unit all day and throughout the finals series, with Ted Clancy being awarded best on ground, assisted by the relentless pressure of Ron and Ben Staggard.
Another wonderful season by all involved and players and coaches would like to thank the Benalla community for the tremendous support throughout the season and finals series.
