Seymour took a four-goal lead in what was a competitive first quarter for the two sides. The second quarter proved just as competitive with Benalla within striking distance, being down eight at half-time.
Unfortunately for Benalla, the third quarter is where things began to unravel, with Seymour shooting six unanswered goals in four minutes to round out the third term, its lead now growing to 23.
The final stretch was more competitive with Benalla putting more points on the board. However, it wasn't enough to catch the Lions who pulled away to finish 27 goals ahead in a 41-68 win.
Benalla coach Jo Toms reflected on the game and highlighted some important strong and weak points in the Saints’ game that will be addressed in the coming weeks.
“Throughout the first half we were playing great and staying competitive with Seymour, we moved and shot really well,” she said.
“Unfortunately we had a bit of a lapse in the third quarter which really hindered our chances of a win.
“We are doing a lot of things really well, we just still need to ensure that we are working the whole game and making better decisions overall in regards to some aspects of the game.”
Toms highlighted Ella Sheehan as the Saints’ best on court against Seymour, the goal shooter scored impressive 20 goals in the game.
Overall, Toms is satisfied with how her players are performing and can see an improvement from them each week, which will allow Benalla to form continuity in the side.
“Ella came on and really dominated in her position as goal shooter on the weekend, she really made an impact for us,” she said.
“I’m really happy with the girls so far, we haven't had a win so far but it is only a matter of time and once we build some consistency, our fortunes will change.
“Every game we are improving in every aspect of the game so we are striving for a stronger second half of the season.”
Benalla A-grade will play second-placed Euroa away next week which will prove a steep challenge for a side who is yet to get a win on the board.
