Benalla winter tennis competition heating up

Terip’s Cindy Hayes, Bec Lyttle and Phoebe Macdermid were thankful to include Wappan’s Agnes Kay into their side.

The opening sets went one each way with Jenny Bell and Rhonda Carpenter fighting hard for every game to win 8-2 while Cindy and Bec won 8-4 against Anna Speirs and Liza Karras in lengthy rallies.

Balls found every part of the court, especially the lines, and everyone enjoyed the hard high-quality hitting.

Terip’s superb placement allowed them to control play and the physical contest saw them find their best form. Agnes dominated at net with quick reflex touch for the visitors.

Terip was again victorious by two games to win 4/37 to 2/35.

In Euroa, the home sides were comfortable against their visitors. Seven Creeks’ Rosie Cameron, Ro Ellis, Kelly Hill and Kerry Hewlett defeated Delatite’s Karyn Fraser, Jo O’Brien, Deb McCormack, and Deb Mims who had also included Jill Hayes into their team. Seven Creeks won 6/48 to 0/11.

Creighton’s Creek’s Marja Wondergem, Sue Vaughan, Gayle Furphy and Ros Doxey were convincing winners over Moglonemby.

Judy Sands, Marlene Hanrahan, and Lyn Johnson were joined by Benalla’s Maureen Jewell and toiled hard all day, but the Creeks won 6/48 to 0/23.

Euroa’s Lindall Bigland, Di Ellis, Ruth Nolan and Julie Harrington were challenged in both openers against Mansfield in a hard-fought contest.

Michelle Pigdon, Amanda Steele, Sophie Yencken and Clare Beecham won the first 8-6 while Euroa took the other in a tiebreaker.

The lengthy warm-up suited the home side who took all the other sets, so Euroa won 5/46 to 1/35 to move back up into second spot on the ladder.

Four rounds remain with several teams still in contention to make finals.

The semi-finals will be played in Mansfield on September 9, and the grand final will be held in Euroa on September 16.

After round 14 Terip has 92 points, Euroa 88, Benalla 79, Mansfield 72, Seven Creeks 65, Creighton’s Creek 62, Wappan 59, Moglonemby 38 and Delatite 5.
