The Benalla boy, who joined Tickford Racing in December last year, was in fine form from the get-go in returning to the track for the first time since February's opening round.
Approaching the weekend Zak held the lead in the Super2 Championship and stormed home inside the top 10 during both of Friday’s practice sessions.
In qualifying for race one, he upped the ante to poll fifth.
Best then went one further in Saturday’s main event, crossing the line in fourth with a time of 28:12 over 21 laps, just two seconds off the pace set by leader Broc Feeney.
“For Friday’s practices we were in the top 10 for both sessions, we were just learning the track and finding our feet,” Best said.
“We found some pace overnight and qualified for race one; we finished that in fourth which was a good start to the weekend and gave us some confidence going into Sunday morning.”
Best was in sublime touch during Sunday’s qualifier for race two, showing a remarkably cool head for someone his age as he raced home his Ford Falcon FG not far behind Feeney’s Holden Commodore in first.
Building on a buoyant second-place finish, Best replicated his effort the previous day with yet another fourth finish in race two on a track he had never previously raced before.
Though surrendering his championship lead and dropping into second, Best was pleased with his efforts and was eager to hit the track this weekend for the WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint.
“We had two safety cars and got pushed back . . . but it was still a strong finish for us,” he said.
“Overall, it was a good weekend; we lost the championship lead, but we’re not too far behind and we still retained second.
“I can’t wait to get out there next weekend.”
