Racing Minister Anthony Carbines has announced $1.55 million to completely redevelop the racetrack — with Racing Victoria and the Benalla Racing Club matching the investment.
The project will provide a more reliable racing and training surface all year round by replacing the surface of the track with sandy loam and putting in a better drainage system.
A reinstated chute will allow for race distances of 2300m and varied starting points, while improved grass training spaces for local trainers will boost the course’s appeal for trainers, jockeys and racing fans alike.
Animal welfare will be prioritised throughout the works, with an increase to the width of the track from 16 metres to 19 metres to decrease congestion during races.
“This track redevelopment will help position Benalla as an exciting regional hub for racing and training — rain, hail or shine,” Mr Carbines said.
“We’ll always back the racing industry and the tens of thousands of jobs it supports in regional Victoria.”
Works will be completed by March 2026. During this period there will be no racing at the venue; however, training on the sand track will continue to ensure minimal disruption to trainers.
The Benalla Racing Club is home to 15 trainers and 300 horses. The club hosts 11 race meetings and six trial or jump-out meetings annually.
Benalla Racing Club president Greg McNulty said the funding would not only allow for improved facilities at the racecourse, but would have a positive flow-on effect towards the Benalla community as well.
“We’re grateful for the support from the Victorian Government to upgrade the track and help Benalla become the place to be for training and racing,” Mr McNulty said.
“Race meetings at Benalla have an impressive flow-on effect to the rest of the community, particularly to our economy, and we can’t wait to welcome even more patrons, trainers and horses to our racing club following the track redevelopment.”
The racing industry in Victoria generates more than $4 billion for the economy and helps sustain almost 35,000 full-time equivalent jobs locally.
