In the HDFNL under-18s preliminary final, Lockington-Bamawm United triumphed against Huntly in a tight contest, locking the Cats into a date with the Demons to decide the league champions.
In the first quarter, the Hawks looked the stronger outfit, kicking a double to take the lead at quarter-time — LBU trailed by four points at quarter-time, scoring a goal and a pair of behinds.
The Cats came together in the second period and kicked accurately, piling on four goals and a behind to snatch the lead off Huntly. The Hawks still managed to kick a goal, and they were now 15 points behind at half-time.
Huntly managed to flip the script following the break, scoring four goals in the third term while limiting LBU to a goal and three behinds, and retaking the lead by a single point to set up a nail-biting fourth quarter.
It’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish, and the Cats exemplified this, leaving their best football for the final stretch of the game.
LBU scored three goals and a behind in the final quarter, while the Hawks had their wings clipped. They kicked only one goal and two behinds and relinquished not only their lead but the game to the hungry Cats.
The final score was LBU 9.7 (61) to Huntly 8.3 (51).
LBU’s 10-point win meant they had booked themselves into the grand final against a robust White Hills side looking to regain their premiership glory after beating North Bendigo in the 2022 grand final.
The premiership decider is scheduled for a 9.30am first bounce on Saturday, September 7, at Strauch Reserve.
Netball
Under-13s
LBU’s under-13 netball side defeated Elmore convincingly on Saturday to give themselves a grand final berth against rival club Leitchville-Gunbower.
LBU’s 11-goal victory over Elmore is reminiscent of their match-up in round 18, where the Cats triumphed by nine goals.
The final score for the preliminary final was LBU 40 to Elmore 29.
The Cats will play the Bombers in the premiership decider at 8.30am on Saturday, September 7 at Huntly Court.
Under-17s
LBU’s under-17 team couldn’t best Huntly in a tight preliminary final on Saturday.
The Hawks got the best of the Cats, who went down by 11 goals in the end, with the final score being LBU 32 to Huntly 43.
The Hawks will face off against division leaders Mount Pleasant in the grand final.
B-Reserve
In a down-to-the-wire finish, the Cats came tantalisingly short of a grand final appearance when they lost to Huntly in their preliminary final.
The Hawks won the day by four goals, with the final score being LBU 48 to Huntly 52.
Huntly will play against White Hills in the grand final to decide the B-Reserve champion.
