Briggs took out the D-grade event at a weekend tournament in Wodonga in late 2021, having only taken up the sport earlier that year.
In a short space of time, the young gun has stepped up to play in the main competition at Benalla Squash Club, as well as the junior squad.
His game improved enough that by the end of the year, Briggs was keen to give a tournament a go.
His progress has been quite an achievement, and is set to continue this year as he plays in both juniors and seniors at Benalla Squash Club.
The junior squad is under way again this year, with a new time slot of 4pm on Sundays.
Junior squash co-ordinator Vicki Besselaar will be running a new format and coaching will be available.
The club also plays racquetball and uses many styles of ball and racquet to suit juniors’ ability.
Benalla Squash Club co-ordinator Greg Murphy said he hoped Alex’s success would inspire more youngsters in Benalla to take up squash.
“We had many juniors in the squad last year and our club’s thanks goes out to Kate McPadden who ran it,” he said.
“All the juniors improved and progressed very well throughout the year despite interruptions.
“We are looking forward to another year of a flourishing junior squad and I know Alex is keen to have more kids join him on Sundays.
“No doubt he will be going to more tournaments again this year now that he has tasted victory.”
