The Benalla under-10s faced SYC in a tough match. Team captain Flynn Dowell led his team well. Both he and Teddy Thannhauser were excellent in both centre and defence positions during the game, swapping regularly to stay fresh and keep up their speed. They cleared the goals and send the ball back down the line to their teammates in attack. Sophie Littler and Emma Parker put lots of pressure on the opposing team, peppering the oppositions goalie again and again with dogged attacks. Rhett Parker as goalie was brilliant, and when he came out of goals for a run on the field, he was absolutely awesome at stopping the ball and pushing the ball towards his teammates. It was a great game to watch, and we are very proud of how our youngest team worked together and used the specific skills coach was drilling into them this week.
Under-12
The under-12s team played Mooroopna this week in Shepparton. The team worked well together to deliver an amazing three goals but unfortunately Mooroopna won 12:3. Throughout the game, the team was able to back each other up to produce some lovely plays which challenged the opposition. They came close to the goals a multitude of times having some success which allowed them to continue working together well. The team played well displaying some lovely skills which have been developed during the time at practice and in the game which allowed them to surpass the opposing side sometimes.
Goals: William David Keen (1), Abigail Thannhauser (1), and Finn Thompson (1)
Umpire votes: Bella Gillies (3), Steele Adams (2), and Abigail Thannhauser (1)
Under-16B Orange
The under-16B Orange team played a ripper round against SCC Lions where they won. The team played a well-rounded game where from the back line Brodie and Amity worked together to stop the attack from SCC Lions. Their defence skills reduced the potential for a goal-scoring opportunity for the Lions. These players were constantly switching up their positions to help the team out, allowing Amity to close to goals a couple of times.
The brothers Kobe and Brodie partnered up to help back each other and deliver the ball between themselves to the other end of the field. The whole team worked well to together to deliver an amazing and outstanding result.
Goals: Xaiver Karmer (6), Brodie Rawlings (3), Amity Hurd (3), Kobe Rawlings (2)
Umpire votes: Amity Hurd (3), Xaiver Karmer (2), and Brodie Rawlings (1)
Under-16B Black
Under-16B Black’s second game for the season was an even one against Echuca with no bench. Jack had a busy game across the field, scoring two goals with long, fast hits from the near half line. Luci made great positions in the wing, with Angus sending the ball up her way to score the second goal. Sophie assisted several goals, moving between the back and forward lines, with Alex halting many goals. The juniors played a lovely game demonstrating all the skills they have learnt together in practice, it is also wonderful to see them working together well to have a fantastic result in the end.
Goals: Angus Hayes (4), Jack Chittick (3), Lucinda Hurd (2)
Umpire votes: Jack Chittick (3), Angus Hayes (2), and Sophie Winkler (1).
Under-16A
Benalla under-16sA had another amazing game over in Shepparton, winning against Grammar 17-7. Goalie Noah Gillies blocked many skilful shots at goal, with help from Caleb and Olly Gillies who held the back line together. Meanwhile, leading goal scorers Angus and Zander manoeuvred their way up the field in attack. Jacinta and Erin both had a stellar game, creating countless plays for the team. It was clear that the teamwork has been developing over the weeks, and the club looks forward for another great season with the juniors.
Goals: Angus Woodward (5), Zander Gillies (5), Olly Gillies (4), Jacinta Woodward (2), Caleb Gillies (1)
Women vs Strikers
The women played a tough game against Strikers this week, where they unfortunately went down 5-2. The opposition came out strong causing Benalla to change their game play quickly making many players adapt to a more defensive side of their position. Jacinta Woodward to the forward line stepped up this week, playing a stellar game allowing for multiple successful changes in game allowing Benalla to attack on strikers. She positioned herself really well and collected the ball in multiple occasions for a run-on goal. Across the attacking line, Siobhan, and Jacqui along with Jacinta challenged the tough Strikers to have a couple cracks on goal even in the end turning the challenge into a goal.
Towards the defensive end of the field, Sophie played a wonderful hit through the middle of the field to Jacqui which allowed Benalla to bypass majority of the Strikers defence and attack to make a goal. Though the opposition tested Benalla in many ways, the back line and goalie reduced the threat to minimise the number of goals allowed in. Mel and Bec within the back line helped to stop the opposition in a lot of times which slowed the play down even sometimes switching the play around.
Goals: Jacqueline Aylan-Parker (2)
Umpire votes: Jacinta Woodward (3), Rebecca Littler (2), and Jacqueline Aylan-Parker (1)
B Men vs Echuca
The men dominated the game this week against the Echuca side, 4-0. With a switch in the game, Charlie Grimwade stepped up to play in goals this week where he did not let any goals in from the opposition. Within the half line, James Black was able to divert the play from defence to attack even some using some handy skills to quickly get around Echuca easily.
On the front line, Noah, Caleb, and Joel worked together to attack the opposition and further advance into the goal circle. David backed them a few times which allowed for more options when attacking. Overall, the men played an interesting game where they created some lovely plays which resulted in a fantastic result of a win.
Goals: Noah Gillies (1), Timothy Halligan (1), David McIntyre (1), and Caleb Gillies (1).
Umpire votes: Noah Gillies (3), Cameron Gillies (2), and Joel Hamill (1)
