Kyabram was restricted to a handy but not unbeatable score of 9-196 off its 45 overs, which the visitors rounded up in 43.1 overs with seven wickets in hand.
The Redbacks won the toss and elected to bat and, led by Billy McLay and Paul Parsons, put a respectable score on the board.
But, for the first 30 overs, the Kyabram batsmen were unable to get on top of the accurate CPSTB attack and then lost wickets chasing runs towards the end of their innings.
Billy McLay, batting at number three, got himself back into form with a careful 84 off 135 deliveries, but found the boundary line only twice.
Parsons, who opened with Kyle Fitzgerald, who fell cheaply, made 61 off 86 deliveries with four boundaries and a six. But after he departed, only Cade Mueller with 19 held up the visitors’ attack.
Batting gun Kyle Mueller fell for 13, caught out on the boundary line when trying to accelerate Kyabram’s run rate.
Opening bowlers Dwain Vidler and Ramada Yze got the breakthroughs with the ball for their side, taking a combined seven wickets, but all their bowlers were tight.
In reply, CPSTB batsmen led by skipper Tyler Larkin with 86 including 12 boundaries and a six and Connor Hayes with an unbeaten 53 showed the way and guided their side to victory with 11 balls remaining and seven wickets in hand.
‘’We should have gone for the runs a bit earlier,’’ Kyabram coach Jackson McLay said.
‘‘But, they bowled well and forced us to hit the ball where they wanted us to, so you have to give them credit.’’
Kyabram will play its first game away for the season in the third round this Saturday when it tackles Old Students at Kialla in another one-day game.
Lower grades
Kyabram’s B-grade side went down fighting in a high scoring shoot-out with Tatura.
Tatura posted 8-241 off its 45 overs and with skipper and opener Jason Parsons leading the way with 82, including 12 fours and a six, Kyabram came up just 10 runs short in its run chase with three wickets in hand.
Ethan Hart with 35, Jack Young and Paul Wickham, each with 24, and young Quinn Wickham with an unbeaten 21 also made handy contributions to the Kyabram score.
Spinner Alec Young was the pick of the Kyabram bowlers with 3-27 off nine overs. He was the team’s only multiple wicket-taker.
In E-grade, Kyabram opened its season with a win over Waaia.
With Flynn Burrows taking 3-36 off six overs and Jonathan Hipwell and Max Coates both claiming two wickets, Kyabram bowled Waaia out for 152 in 28 overs in the clash at the Kyabram P-12 College oval.
With Dylan Lopez showing the way with an unbeaten 54, which included seven fours and a six, Kyabram’s batsmen got the winning runs with 14 balls to spare and two wickets in hand.
