Former Cooma Cricket Club player Sam Langley is due home this weekend after playing cricket in England this year and is expected to make his debut with Kyabram in the fourth round of the Haisman Shield against Shepparton Youth Club United.
Kyabram Cricket Club coach Jackson McLay said Langley, a medium fast bowler, would add to his team’s bowling depth.
‘‘He’ll be good for us and give us more bowling options,’’ McLay said.
Merrigum Golf Club to host fun day
Golfers – keep this date free.
On Saturday, November 15 the annual Techie’s Golf Day is being staged by the Merrigum Golf Club.
‘Techie’, aka Francis Ryan, runs the Kyabram business of Techies Tyres and has been sponsoring the golf day for many years, which the club greatly appreciates.
There will fantastic prizes up for grabs in a three-person (ladies are welcome) ambrose event.
Hit-off time is 11am to 1pm, and everyone is welcome.
Word has got around, even Techie is loosening up the shoulders currently in a bid to win his own event.
2026 football signings galore
Former Kyabram champion defender Lachie Smith is heading back into familiar country for next season’s footy season, but it’s not with his old club.
He is going to pull on the boots for Kyabram and District League club Violet Town, which is busily recruiting in a bid to climb the ladder next season.
Smith has played with North Heidelberg in Melbourne’s Northern League for the past two years after leaving Kyabram in 2023 with three premierships — 2016, 2017 and 2019 — under his belt. He was also a member of the Benalla side that beat the Bombers for the 2015 GVL flag.
He has represented the GVL on four occasions.
The Towners have also added Euroa’s Matt Ivill and former ruckman John Ikupu to their list of newcomers for the 2026 season.
Rochester Football Club is working hard to go one better in next year’s Goulburn Valley League season, naming a prize recruit.
The Tigers, runners-up to Kyabram this season, have signed Marty Hore, a former Melbourne Football Club player drafted with the Demons’ fourth selection and 56th overall pick in the 2018 AFL Draft.
Originally from the Leitchville-Gunbower Football Club, he made his debut in the 26-point loss to Port Adelaide at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the opening round of the 2019 season.
Injury prone, he was delisted by the Demons at the end of the 2021 season, but returned to the club during the pre-season supplementary selection period at the end of 2023.
He spent two seasons at the Demons in his second stint, before again being delisted at the end of this season.
He is a 190cm defender who will be a huge asset for Rochester if he can remain injury-free.
The Tigers are also hopeful that this season’s casualties, high-profile players in Mitch Cricelli and Dylan Gordon, will return next season to further bolster their ranks.
Rochester wasn’t overwhelmed by Kyabram in this GVL grand final and if it can put its best side on the park consistently, it will be a major player again in the battle for the 2026 premiership.
Shepparton Swans have lost two of their best players, in this season’s best-and-fairest award winner Nathan Hrovat and ruck colossus Mark Kovacedvic, who are heading to Riddell for the 2026 season, but Ethan Warburton is returning after a stint in South Australia.
Seymour has added Parkside big man Tom Stapleton to its ranks for next season.
Murph is back
Great to see Echuca-Moama cricketer Todd Murphy back playing in Victoria’s One Day Cup side.
Murphy has just returned from touring India with the Australian A side and played in two test games while on the subcontinent, with some encouraging performances with both bat and ball.
While Murphy missed out on securing an Australian Cricket contract this season, he is still regarded as one of the spin bowlers in line to replace Australia’s premier spinner, Nathan Lyon, when he retires.
