Under 12 vs GVGS
Benalla’s U12s fought hard against a very experienced GVGS team, with captain William running hard across the whole field to gain possession of the ball and convert one of many shots on goal.
Solid defence from Phoenix and great running by Hayden helped push the ball up Benalla’s end, where Madeleine scored her first goal in competition hockey, with a fantastic shot in past their goalie.
Teddy was strong in front of goals, repelling many runs and covering the gaps while goalie Finn halted 12 shots on goal.
Sophie had a stellar second half, with many runs and passes through towards goal, but Benalla was graceful in the 2:7 defeat.
Goals: Madeleine 1; William 1.
Umpire Best and Fairest votes: Phoenix Erickson 3; Madeleine Wright 2; William Keen 1.
Under 15 Orange vs Echuca
Goalie Steele watches Talon let this one pass U15 Orange’s goal for a 16-yard free hit.
Benalla U15 Orange played a young Echuca side, with Orange’s teamwork being showcased on Saturday, with everyone supporting the others verbally as well as on the ball.
Angus W and captain Talon were a driving force throughout the game, with fantastic tackles, pressure and ball control, as well as handy runs up the field to pass into the circle to the wings or to score a few solo-goals.
Liam showed great control with at least three runs from full back, down the wing and into the circle. He also scored off a penalty corner rebound after first hitting the post.
Erin was fantastic as centre half, distributing the ball effectively to team mates all game, as well as scoring off a nice run into the circle.
Goalie Steele made a fantastic save off a hard hit into goals, sending the ball flying out wide to be picked up by the speedy Talon and sent up the field.
Abbie played yet another great defensive game and is really building on confidence in her first year in the older age group.
Echuca never gave up all game, with a fierce final five minutes sadly to no avail in Benalla’s decisive 10:0 win.
Goals: Angus W 4; Talon 3; Liam 2; Erin Jenkins 1.
Umpire Best and Fairest votes: Angus Woodward 3; Liam Carroll 2; Talon McKenzie 1.
Under 15 Black vs Strikers Blue
Benalla’s Under 15 Black side had another hard game this week, against the skilful Strikers Blue.
Angus H led through the midfield, using the right side to swing in towards captain Steele and Kobe in the circle, as well as scoring the first goal himself.
Finn had a great game, with some very handy saves as a full back, then pushing up into the circle where his persistence paid off with the teams’ second goal bouncing off a Strikers foot.
Cael made some timely clearances out of the circle as a full back, out wide towards Jack on the right wing who made some great runs up the line and pushed into the circle, and was unlucky not to score.
Goalie Alexander showed his dexterity in deflecting the ball out low and wide, saving many goals.
Xavier was again strong through the midfield, with some nice runs up the centre and a fantastic solo run into an empty circle to score around the goalie.
Sadly Strikers scored with less than a minute to go, leaving the scores tied for a 3:3 draw.
Goals: Angus H 1; Finn Thompson 1; Xavier Kramer 1.
Umpire Best and Fairest votes: Angus Hayes 3; Alexander Orlov 2; Jack Chittick 1.
