Lockington Bowls Club
The club rounded off the year with the final night of barefoot bowls in conjunction with the annual Christmas break-up. Always something to report.
Tuesday evening was a spectacular success as there were many members, barefoot bowlers and supporters in attendance on a balmy night.
There was action aplenty on the greens as teams battled for the chocolates in a game of 2 bowl triples.
Only one two-game winner greeted the judge and that was the star-studded trio comprising Peter Standl, Steve Pavone, and Andy Harris (s) who collected 2 wins +14 shots ahead of two teams with a 1 win/1 tie and a 1 win/1 loss.
On a countback Kevin Humbert, Luke Ryan, and Mel Freeman (s) had win/tie +10 shots while Jayden D Wright, Steve McKee, and Ashley Dobell (s) win/loss +3 shots.
After play, there was a bulk amount of raffle prizes that were happily accepted by the fortunate winners.
Thanks to Mel Freeman, Kym Ray, and Cindy Felmingham for organising the field and the lady members who contributed to a wonderful meal including several cuts of meat and delightful salads.
A variety of sweets completed the evening, together with greetings and happy new year messages from presidents John van den Bosch and Margaret Dowie.
The greens staff, barmen and chefs were also acknowledged.
The final round of midweek pennant before the Christmas-new year break was played on Tuesday, with success coming to the club in both divisions.
Division three defeated Elmore in a great battle away from home with the final scoreline reading 42-35 in our favour (Kathi Maddison, Annette Brereton, Margaret Dowie, Denise Gilmore (s) d. K Wills 23-16; Lorraine Appleby, Pauline Humbert, Sue Harris, Phylis MacFarlane (s) drew M Browne 19-all).
Division four travelled to Kyabram and returned home with two rink wins and a 52-30 result (John Andrea, Pos Andrea, Shane Felmingham, Steve Peter (s) d. J Barrett 26-17; Terrill Westwood, Erin Gumbleton, Russell Shawcross, Cindy Felmingham (s) d. M Tenace 26-13).
At the break, division three are in fifth position on the premiership ladder, while division four is placed second behind the ladder leader Stanhope.
In the first game back on January 20, the division four line-up against Stanhope - big game.
A reminder, the resumption of the Campaspe Area Pennant will be Saturday, January 17 for weekend pennant while midweek pennant will resume on Tuesday, January 20.
Club championships are slowly being played out, with Sue Harris and Kathi Maddison engaging in an enormous semi-final struggle over 20 ends as the scores fluctuated on several occasions.
Maddison grabbed the early ascendancy and led 13-7, then increased it to 18-12 before Harris suddenly clawed her way back from the brink and picked up a four then a couple of ends to draw within one shot 19-20 on 15 ends.
Both bowlers were trying desperately to win the semi-final with scores drawn level at 22-all before Harris was able to pick up a triple and win the match 25-22 and will now meet the winner of the other semi-final between Leanne McInnes-Kim Ray for the club championship honours.
In the men's club championship latest rounds, Andy Harris accounted for John van den Bosch to gain a semi-final spot, while Neil Haines defeated son Ian Haines in a classic display of bowls from both contenders.
Haines (Snr) will now meet Lloyd Buchanan.
Up the top of the order, Steve Pavone will play Dave Thomas in a semi-final.
