Batting first, Lavington made 7-187 and dismissed Corowa for 86, with captain Jarryd Hatton making 26 and last man in, Nick Grant remaining unbeaten on 17.
A Grade’s season came to a sad end after failing with the bat in the grand final. Hatton and Grant opened the bowling and bowled good lines, but with plays and misses and edges over the wicketkeeper couldn’t get the early breakthrough.
The score reached 36 in the 13th over before Dan Christian got the first breakthrough. Lavington kept the scoring ticking over before Jay Lavis was rewarded with a wicket with the score on 70. Patrick Lavis picked up the next wicket with the score at 98 and when Mark Athanitis collected one in the 36th over the game was evenly poised at 4 for 108.
But Lavington was able to continue to build partnerships as they finished their 50 overs at 7 for 187. Patrick Lavis was the leading wicket taker with 2 for 26 off 6 overs, while Mark Athanitis took 1 for 9 off 4 overs, Jay Lavis took 1 for 18 off 6 overs, Dan Christian took 1 for 27 off 8 overs, Jarryd Hatton 1 for 32 off 10 overs and Ben Mitchell took 1 for 52 off his 10 overs.
In reply, Patrick Lavis hit a four in the second over, but it went downhill quickly, with Dan Christian going in that second over, followed quickly by Matt Grantham to leave Corowa 2 for 7.
Some great bowling by the Lavington openers saw Corowa struggling to score as more wickets continued to fall and Corowa slumped to 4 for 16. It only got worse for Corowa when the first change bowl came on as he collected three quick wickets and Corowa fell to 7 for 29. And when the leg spinner took Jarred Lane’s wicket in his first over Corowa was 8 for 34.
Hatton took the long handle, smashing two sixes and two fours in his 15-ball innings of 26. The last pair of Jack Eales and Nick Grant produced the biggest partnership of the innings of 29 with Grant smashing a six and four before Eales went for 13, with Corowa bowled out for 86 with Grant 17 not out.
In the four CAW seasons to date, Corowa has finished 6 th, 9 th 8 th and second. This year’s finals included two big eight-wicket victories for the Roos.
