Having snuck into finals by half a game having finished sixth after a brilliant five-game winning streak to end the regular season, the Towners faced third-placed Lancaster the previous weekend in an elimination final, and made light work of the Wombats with a 49-39 victory to progress to the second round.
Coming up against reigning premier Shepparton East on Sunday afternoon at Murchison Recreation Reserve, the Towners continued to prove they are the dark horse of the division, claiming yet another scalp.
With a 41-34 victory, the Towners sent the reigning premier packing, notching a second win over a top four rival in as many weeks and extending their winning streak to seven on the bounce, and now find themselves in a preliminary final, one win away from a fairytale grand final berth after being the last team to qualify for finals.
But their opponent in this Saturday’s preliminary final will prove to be the toughest test of all, with minor premier Nagambie awaiting in the clash scheduled for 1pm at Undera Recreation Reserve.
Having finished atop the ladder, the Lakers went down to second-placed Tallygaroopna by five goals in Saturday’s first semi-final, leading to their match-up with the Towners this weekend.
The pair has faced off twice already this season, the first time in round one a two-goal victory to Nagambie, which doubled down with a nine-goal win in round 13, though the Towners will be looking to buck that trend this weekend and keep their dream run going.
The side remains the Towners’ only netball hope, too, after the C-grade and under-17 sides suffered semi-final defeats at the weekend, falling 35-51 and 35-46, respectively, both to Stanhope.
The Towners’ under-15 football side also bowed out at the weekend, having faced Avenel at Murchison Recreation Reserve on Sunday.
The last remaining Violet Town side in contention in the football stakes, the Towners were valiant, but ultimately were unable to overcome the Swans, going down 3.6 (24) to 5.10 (40).
Noah Norman was named the Towners’ best in the loss, closely followed by Jye-Loki Webb and Jakai Stevens, while Takana Rerekura, Cooper Pummeroy (one goal) and Braxen Shiels were also influential and Parker Jeffrey and Lucas Webster rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
