The Wombats appear to be going from strength to strength, with the side losing once in the game of the KDL season so far, against Shepparton East.
Outside of that, it has been smooth sailing for Lancaster, and the same could be said with its match-up with the Tigers.
Travelling to Ironbark Stadium, the Wombats got to work instantly, nailing 4.4 from the onset while limiting Rushworth to one behind in the opening term.
The Tigers were able to find some form in the second period, kicking a pair of goals to recoup some lost ground, but Lancaster continued on, adding two goals of its own to the tally.
The Wombats’ 26-point half-time lead quickly diminished in the third term as red-hot Rushworth came out firing, nailing six goals in the term.
Meanwhile, Lancaster kicked a trio of goals to keep its nose in front, but would’ve been disappointed to not convert six of its behinds into more majors.
With the difference just 12 heading into the final frame, spectators held their breath for what could’ve been a major upset.
But that wasn’t the case.
While a valiant effort from the Tigers saw them go close (4.3) it wasn’t enough to stop the class of the Wombats, who also drilled four goals as well to escape with the win.
The final score was Lancaster 15.11 (101) to Rushworth 12.8 (80).
Thomas Davies, Charlie McLay, Coby O’Neill, Cameron Simpson, Riley Williams and Morrie Serra were the Wombats’ best.
Lancaster is in for a big match-up in round nine when it takes on Avenel at home, while Rushworth will have a good chance to get back into the winners column against Girgarre.
