Round two of the Victorian Motor Racing Championship took place at Winton over the weekend, with a wide range of categories taking to the track.
Racers from the Australian Super Truck Championship, Victorian Formula Racing Series, Super TT and Vic V8s were all competing, but the man the crowd wanted to see was Benalla’s Best.

The 2023 Dunlop Super2 Series leader swapped his Anderson Motorsport Mustang for a VMRC Hyper Racer X1 on the weekend as he lined up alongside series leader Luke Klaver and 2022 champion Dean Crooke, who praised Best before they got racing.
“I have no doubt that a driver with Zak’s proven skill sets will adapt quickly to ‘ground effects’ driving techniques,” Crooke said.
“It should be fun.”
While driving the Hyper Racer provided Best with valuable experience, the rising star was also on track at Winton on Tuesday, July 18 testing a Tickford Gen3 Supercar.
The time on track will be vital for Best as he prepares to co-drive with the Tickford team at the famous Sandown and Bathurst enduro races.
The confirmation of Best co-driving with James Courtney in the Snowy River Mustang also comes at a time when the Benalla driver is being backed by his Super2 team boss, Michael Anderson, to be snatched up by a Supercars team for next season.
With this being the time that teams start locking in drivers for next year, it will not be long before Benalla knows if one of its own has reached the pinnacle level of closed-wheel racing in Australia.
