Terence Donovan: The Man Behind Doug Willis

Terence Donovan spent more than six decades on Australian and British stages and screens, but to generations of viewers he will always be one man: Doug Willis, the builder-turned-motel-owner who anchored Neighbours on and off for over 25 years, across 624 episodes. Donovan passed away in July 2026, aged 90, closing out a career that ran from 1960s West End television through to soap opera's biggest stage.

From London to Melbourne

Donovan was born Terence Patrick Donovan in London on 28 October 1935. He emigrated to Australia with his parents at 14, reuniting with his older brother George. Before acting became his living, he worked as a truck driver and a house painter; ordinary jobs that gave no hint of the career to come.

His break arrived in 1960, when he landed a role in a Garnet H. Carroll stage production of West Side Story. That led to further musical theatre work with the same production company, including The Most Happy Fella and The Sound of Music. He later joined the Emerald Hill Theatre Company after meeting its founder, Wal Cherry, picking up small television roles along the way, including a courtroom drama and the children's series The Magic Boomerang.

Frustrated by the limited opportunities available to him in Australia, Donovan moved back to London in 1963. There he found steady television work with the Rediffusion and Granada networks, appearing in shows including The Champions, Man in a Suitcase, Danger Man and The Prisoner, and even had a small part in the film adaptation of Oliver!. He later returned to Australia and threw himself back into local theatre.

Cop shows and a defining role in Breaker Morant

Back home, Donovan moved into Crawford Productions' stable of police dramas, guesting on Homicide and Hunter before landing the role of Detective Mick Peters in Division 4, which he played from 1969 to 1975. In 1978 he took the title role in the first-ever staging of Kenneth G. Ross's play Breaker Morant, performed by the Melbourne Theatre Company; a role he didn't reprise for the 1980 film version, where he instead played Captain Hunt.

That same period saw him lead the crime film Money Movers (1978), a picture that won critical praise, and take on the role of Detective Senior Sergeant Vic Cameron in Cop Shop from 1979 to 1981. He walked away from Cop Shop before his contract was up, with no other job lined up, a gamble that paid off when he was cast as Henry Craig in The Man from Snowy River shortly afterward, a film that remains one of the most beloved in Australian cinema history.

The following years were a mix of theatre and screen work: a stint as lawyer Billy Flynn in the Sydney Theatre Company's Chicago, the lead in a stage musical called The Stripper, and roles through the mid-1980s in shows like Prisoner, Sons and Daughters and the E Street pilot.

Ramsay Street

Donovan joined Home and Away in 1990 for a six-week run as Al Simpson, but it was Neighbours that made him a household name to a generation of Australians. He joined the cast that same year as Doug Willis, the patriarch of the Willis family, staying with the role until his on-screen family was written out in 1994.

He wasn't done with Ramsay Street, though. Donovan returned for the show's 20th-anniversary special in 2005, came back again in 2014, and appeared in the 30th-anniversary documentary in 2015. A further run in 2016 saw Doug's storyline reach its conclusion, and he made one last cameo in the show's 2022 finale episode, sharing the screen with his son Jason and granddaughter Jemma where three generations of the same family on the same soap, a first for Australian television.

Family and legacy

Donovan raised his son, actor and singer Jason Donovan, largely on his own before remarrying. It was reportedly Terence who encouraged Jason to turn down an earlier chance at Neighbours so he could finish school first - Jason joined the show in 1986 as Scott Robinson, going on to a hugely successful pop career off the back of it. Jason's own daughter, Jemma Donovan, later joined Neighbours too, giving the Donovans a rare three-generation run on a single show.

Beyond his own credits, Donovan's presence helped anchor Neighbours during some of its most-watched years, and Doug Willis became one of the show's most enduring father figures - a steady, warm counterpoint to decades of Ramsay Street drama. For viewers who grew up with the show in the 1990s and returned to it over the years for anniversary specials and reunions, Donovan's Doug was a constant: proof the show still had its original heart.
