MAFS expert Mel Schilling dies aged 54
Mel Schilling, beloved MAFS relationship expert, has died aged 54 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Peter passed away on Monday 27 October 2025, at Justin Villa, Balwyn, 82 aged years. He was ordained a priest at St Dominic’s Parish, Camberwell East on 31 May 1969. He was appointed Assistant Priest at West Preston (1970) and Flemington (1970) Parishes. In 1973, Fr Peter began fulltime study at the Pastoral Institute of Religious Education and then undertook study at Campion Hall, Oxford, England. When he returned from study he was appointed as Assistant Priest at Moonee Ponds (1976) and Thomastown West (1980). In 1986 he was appointed Parish Priest of Altona North until 2000 when he was appointed Parish Priest of Preston East. During his time at Preston East, he continued his study for his Masters of Theological Studies the Yarra Theological Union. Fr Peter remained at Preston East Parish for 18 years until 2018 where he was appointed Pastor Emeritus upon his retirement. Fr Peter served God’s people with joy, erudition and generosity particularly with his great affinity for continual study. The Archdiocese is most grateful for his service to the Church, his pastoral care and spiritual guidance for over 56 years.
