MAFS expert Mel Schilling dies aged 54
Mel Schilling, beloved MAFS relationship expert, has died aged 54 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Loved and respected by clergy,
religious and the lay faithful
of the Archdiocese of Adelaide.
Passed away at
Carmelite Residential Care,
Myrtle Bank
on October 16, 2025, age 93.
Monsignor Rice was
a much-loved priest
ordained July 21, 1956,
in the Archdiocese,
serving faithfully across many parishes
including Brighton, St Peters,
Glenelg, Mount Gambier,
Edwardstown, Croydon,
Woodville Gardens, and St Mary’s.
His leadership extended
beyond parish life,
with appointments to
the Council of Sites and Architecture,
Dean of the South East,
Priestly Life and Ministry,
and as a member of
the College of Consultors
and the Council of Priests.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy
from Flinders University,
with a thesis on the life and ministry
of Archbishop James Gleeson.
His intellectual contributions
and pastoral generosity
were deeply appreciated
by all who knew him.
A passionate golfer
and devoted Adelaide Crows supporter,
Monsignor Rice will be
lovingly remembered
for his unwavering service
over 69 years
in the Archdiocese of Adelaide.
We also acknowledge with gratitude
the many weekend supplies
he generously undertook
during his retirement.
He will be deeply missed by clergy,
religious, and the faithful.
Our deepest sympathy and our prayers
to the Rice family, and especially Jan,
from Archbishop Patrick O’Regan DD,
Fr Dean Marin VG, Clergy, Religious
and the people of the Archdiocese.
