The showcase sale was held as part of Jersey Australia’s annual conference in Tasmania.
Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the sale and conference had been great successes, showcasing the important role of Jersey cows in Tasmania and the value of agriculture in the state.
Genetics Australia was major sponsor for the virtual sale conducted by well-known Goulburn Valley auctioneer Brian Leslie from Dairy Livestock Services and online through Elite Livestock Auctions.
“The sale offered a cow for everyone’s breeding objective, with high type, high production or high BPI, with many tested polled or A2 and backed by generations of outstanding breeding by dairy’s finest breeders,” Mr Barrett said.
“The showcase sale was a great success and we were very pleased with the results, although the prices reflected a margin of uncertainty in the industry, especially in relation to input costs.”
Mr Leslie said there had been great interest in the sale.
“To have 400 people viewing online was a tremendous audience,” he said.
“We had buyers online from all parts of Victoria, NSW and South Australia and we had people from Tasmania in the room and also online.
“The widespread audience was outstanding and it was a very good result for both vendors and buyers.”
The top price of $9000 was paid for Rivendell Joyride Nova, owned by the Menzies family in NSW and purchased by Rocky Allen of Rockstar Jerseys.
This was followed by $8500 for a Bushlea cow and $8000 for Kings Ville, Warrain Treasure and Loxleigh Iris entries.
During the three-day conference, farmers visited the Jersey dairy farms of Peter McCulloch and Brian and Judy Johns and Geoff Heazlewood, along with visits to Ashgrove Cheese and Tasmanian Truffles and several tourist spots.
Lisa Broad was re-elected for a second term as Jersey Australia president at the AGM on May 26.
