Midson Construction Victoria managing director Rod Kol, who will be delivering the project, was on site recently to mark the occasion.
“Midson Construction is very happy to be partnering with Benalla Rural City Council to deliver this major gallery redevelopment, a project that is vital to delivering a modern gallery facility for the Benalla community,” Mr Kol said.
“This redevelopment will bring long-lasting benefits to the broader community by further elevating the position of Benalla on the arts and culture scene.
“But more immediate benefits will flow to local trades and suppliers, with Midson sourcing at least 80 per cent of labour and materials from within the north-east region.”
The highly anticipated project will secure the gallery’s place as one of the premier Victorian and north-east cultural destinations.
The project redevelopment includes a modern restaurant space, state-of-the-art art storage, and improved accessibility and amenities for all visitors at a contracted construction cost of $8.2 million plus contingencies.
The transformation will elevate the existing gallery to a contemporary modern venue capable of attracting and hosting major, significant exhibitions.
Rural City of Benalla Deputy Mayor Justin King said the project was a major win for locals and a vital investment in the town's future.
“We are partnering with Midson Construction to deliver an incredible space that offers real value to our community,” Cr King said.
“We want to make sure that when you visit the gallery, whether it’s to take in the art or simply to catch up with friends over dinner or a coffee, you have a first-rate experience.
“We know that building costs have gone up across the board lately, but investing now means we’re doing the job properly and delivering a space that locals can be proud of for decades to come.
“We have solid financial backing from the state and federal governments to ensure the full scope of the project can be delivered.
“But ultimately, we want to give everyday locals a fantastic, modern gallery without putting any further pressure on our ratepayers.”
Council is delivering the full scope of the project in partnership with the Victorian and federal governments under the Regional Cultural infrastructure Program and the Growing Regions Program.
Council is also continuing to engage the philanthropic community through the Benalla Art Gallery Foundation to support elements of the project delivery.
