On Thursday, May 14 locals are encouraged to come together for a flag-raising ceremony in support of LGBTQIA+ inclusion as part of this year’s IDHOBIT events.
The International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination falls on May 17 annually but Benalla will mark the occasion early to ensure local businesses, services and community members can take part.
Rural City of Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said the day played an important role in creating safe and inclusive communities.
“IDAHOBIT is about standing with our community as a whole and showing that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and included,” Cr Hearn said.
The flag-raising ceremony will be held on Mair St, commencing at 4pm at the Benalla civic centre, followed by an afternoon tea at the Benalla visitor information centre.
As part of the week’s activities, the community is invited to a free screening of the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight at Benalla Cinema at 12.30pm, Sunday, May 17. This coming-of-age drama explores identity, belonging and connection.
