The decision was made at the council meeting on September 9.
In addition, council has now signed a funding agreement with the Victorian Government, securing the $15 million investment that will support delivery of the Benalla Multisport Stadium and help realise key outcomes identified through the Churchill Recreation Reserve Master Plan.
The new stadium is a major investment in local sport and community life.
It will feature two indoor courts, gender-inclusive change rooms, a multipurpose community room, office space, and a canteen.
The facility will give local sporting groups, including the Benalla Netball Association, dedicated, modern facilities to train, play, and connect.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said the announcement is a big win for the whole community.
“This is great news for Benalla,” Cr Hearn said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the Benalla Rural City community to have access to state of the art indoor sporting facilities.
“This isn’t just about sport. It’s about giving people a place to come together, make friends, and be part of something.
“That’s what a strong community looks like.”
The project has been shaped with input from a dedicated project steering committee, along with the Benalla Basketball Association, Benalla Netball Association, Basketball Victoria, Netball Victoria, and current Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre users.
“Council thanks these groups for their ongoing input and support in getting the project to this stage,” Cr Hearn said.
Work on the detailed design is now under way with construction expected to start by mid2027 with anticipated completion by mid-2028.
